
Oakland City Women's Tennis Repeats as River States Champions
Evansville, IN- Oakland City Women's Tennis repeats as RSC Champions with two dominating performances over IU Kokomo and Midway. In the River States Conference tournament, six teams traveled to Evansville, IN to compete to claim a spot at the National Tournament in Mobile, AL.
The first matches on court were IU Kokomo against Shawnee State, and IU Southeast battling IU East. IU Kokomo took quick work of the doubles point against Shawnee State, claiming the three doubles spot by default, and the doubles team of Ava Allen and Chloe Schmidt (IUK) took down Antonia Ilea and Vanessa Akuaku (SSU) 6-4. As they moved into the singles matches, Kokomo took the match in sweeping fashion as they claimed lines 4,5 singles. Reiley Hiser (IUK) defeated Lexy Urban (SS) 6-0, 6-2 and Chloe Schmidt took down Brooklyn Foose (SSU) 6-0, 6-4, winning the match for the Cougars 4-0.
In a similar style match, the Red Wolves of IU East took the doubles point with no problem against the Grenadiers of IU Southeast. Eva Caballero and Linda Marino (IUE) defeated Katie Weimer and Syrenia Hardy (IUS) 6-1, claiming the doubles point with a default at line three doubles. The match was clinched 4-0 in singles with wins by Caballero (IUE) and two defaults at lines 5,6.
In semifinal play it was the Cougars against the top seeded Mighty Oaks and the two seeded Midway Eagles against the three seeded Red Wolves. In a rematch of a 4-3 Midway Eagles win over the Red Wolves, the Eagles started off hot by claiming a tough doubles point. The team of Nana Hishida and Isabella Mickinney (MU) took down Gracie Helms and Brooke Schafstall (IUE) 6-1, which was quickly followed by a 6-4 win of Angelina Herrea and Jasmin Mcclanahan (MU). The Eagles remained hot as they moved into singles play. Agustina Olivero (MU) quickly took down Marino (IUE) 6-2, 6-1 to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Eagles. At line two singles, Eva Caballero (IUE) brought it back to 2-1 with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Mara Guillen (IUE). The match was clinched with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory for Grace Foredge (MU).
In the other semifinal, the Mighty Oaks of Oakland City looked to return to the finals for the third straight year, and in dominating fashion, took down the Cougars 4-0. Isabela Todorovic and Mariana Espinosa (OCU) won 6-2 over Hiser and Oliveria (IUK) and clinched the doubles point with Kataryna Kulynych and Maria Trembach (OCU) over Davidson and O'Rourke (IUK) 6-2. In singles play, Cristina Hurtado (OCU) took down Allen (IUK) 6-0, 6-1, Tiana Sparks (OCU) took down Chloe Schmidt (IUK) 6-1, 6-0 and finishing the match for the Mighty Oaks was Isabela Todorovic (OCU) over Sophia Davidson (IUK) 6-1, 6-0.
For the second straight year it was a Mighty Oaks and Eagles finals match up. In what proved to be a tough match, the Mighty Oaks prevailed to win their second straight RSC Title. The doubles were very tight as Midway took line one doubles 6-1, but the Mighty Oaks took line two 6-1. It all came down to the line three doubles match ups of Maria Trembach and Kataryna Kulynych (OCU) against Angelina Herrera and Jasmin Mcclanahan (MU). The match was back and forth and eventually ended in a tiebreaker to decide the doubles point. Kulynych and Trembach would pull through for the Mighty Oaks with a 7-2 breaker score to win the doubles point. Tensions were high and the singles were set as the Eagles looked to break the 12 match conference winning streak of the Mighty Oaks. The Mighty Oaks quickly took lines 5 and 6 singles by the scores of 6-2, 6-0 (line six) and 6-0, 6-0 (line six) making the score 3-0 in favor of the Mighty Oaks. The momentum then shifted as Olivero (MU) took down Trembach (OCU) 6-1, 6-1 at line one, Sofia Rueda (MU) took a convincing first set over Puente (OCU), Hishida (MU) forced a third set against Aristizabal (OCU), and Guillen took the first set over Hurtado (OCU) 7-5. As the tension rose, Puente (OCU) pulled through and forced a third and deciding set for the Mighty Oaks. She would eventually pull out the match with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory for the Mighty Oaks, winning them back to back conference titles.
