IU East grabs early lead following opening round of RSC Women's Golf Championship

DANIELS, W.Va. -- The opening round of the River States Conference Women's Golf Championship is in the books, and IU East (Ind.) holds a slim one-shot lead over Midway (Ky.) with 36 holes to play.

The Red Wolves, who have won the last two titles, placed four golfers inside the top 10 and shot a 327 on the par 72, 5,869-yard Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, West Virginia.

Midway fired a 328 in the first round on Sunday and sits one shot off the lead, while St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) is nine shots back in third place after shooting a 336.  

Rio Grande (Ohio) notched a 358 in the first round, while Oakland City (Ind.) and IU Kokomo (Ind.) are tied for fifth following a 361. Shawnee State (Ohio) (386) and Alice Lloyd (Ky.) (533) are seventh and eighth, respectively.

Brooklynn Cromwell of IU East paced the 42-player field following a six-over 78 on Sunday. The senior will take a two-shot lead into the second round after carding a pair of birdies and nine pars in the first round.

SMWC's Sophie Boyll recorded an 8-over 80 in the first round and is two shots back, while there is a five-way tie for third place, which includes IU East's Katie Craig, the Midway trio of Bree Russell, Payton Schechter, and Maryssa Phillips, and IU Kokomo's Gracie Tucker.

Monday's second round is scheduled to get underway beginning at 10 a.m. ET. IU Kokomo, Oakland City, and Rio Grande will tee off from No. 1 at 10 a.m., while St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Midway, and IU East will also tee off No. 1 beginning at 10:50 a.m. ET.

Meanwhile, Point Park (Pa.), Alice Lloyd, and Shawnee State will tee off from No. 10 starting at 10:50 a.m. ET.
