Mighty Oaks come up short against Xavier in NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship

MOBILE, Ala. -- No. 22-seeded Oakland City (Ind.) saw their season end on Tuesday (May 14) after suffering a 4-1 defeat to 11th-seeded Xavier (La.) in the first round of the NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama.

The Mighty Oaks, who won their third straight RSC Championship in April, ends their season at 16-7, while the Gold Rush improves to 15-10 as they advance to the second round, where they will face the No. 6 seed Middle Georgia State on Wednesday.

Dedric Ray and Ivan Vazquez picked up a 6-1 win at No. 3 singles before the duo of Julius Hell and VanDer Woody clinched the doubles point for the Gold Rush with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles.

The Mighty Oaks battled back and tied the match at one after Juanes Pinto picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Vazquez at No. 5 singles.

Unfortunately for Oakland City, their run ended after Xavier picked up consecutive wins at No. 4, No. 3, and No. 2 singles. Woody won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3, and Nereo Suarez won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 before Hell clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2.
