DANIELS, W.Va. -- The opening round of the River States Conference Men's Golf Championship is in the books and IU Kokomo (Ind.) and WVU Tech sit atop a leaderboard that has the top five separated by just eight shots with 36 holes to play.

The Cougars and the Golden Bears each fired a 306 and hold a one-shot lead over IU East (Ind.) who sits in third after shooting a 307 on Sunday. Rio Grande (Ohio) and Midway (Ky.) sit in fourth and fifth, respectively, after carding a 311 and a 314 in the opening round.

Point Park (Pa.) (321) and Alice Lloyd (Ky.) (322) enter the leaderboard in sixth and seventh, respectively, while St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) Not only is the team leaderboard jam packed, but the individual leaderboard is as well with 17 players within five shots of the lead. Sixteen of those 17 are chasing WVU Tech's Bryson Beaver who carded five birdies on his way to a 1-over 73.

Just one shot off the pace in a tie for second are Rio Grande's Rodrigo Portilla and Sam Firebaugh of IU East, who each shot a 2-over 74 in the first round. Alice Lloyd's Mason Compton, who tied Beaver with the most birdies in the opening round, is in solo fourth after shooting a 3-over 75.

Five players are tied for fifth, including Jake Miller of IU East, Alfonso Baro of Rio Grande, and the IU Kokomo trio of Corbin Robinson, Hayden Williamson, and Drew Wagner.

Monday's second round is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. ET with two waves going off No. 1 and No. 10.

Point Park, Midway, and Rio Grande makeup the first wave off No. 1, while the top three of IU East, WVU Tech, and IU Kokomo makeup the second way. The first wave off No. 10 sees Ohio Christian, Oakland City, and Shawnee State, while the second wave includes Brescia, St. Mary-of-the-Woods, and Alice Lloyd.
