CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- The opening day of the River States Conference Baseball Championship saw three run-rule victories with all four of the top seeds recording wins in their opening games at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio.
The opening two games of the day saw a pair of run-rule wins with No. 3 Shawnee State (Ohio) recording a 16-6 victory over No. 6 WVU Tech in eight innings, while No. 2 IU Southeast (Ind.) handed No. 7 Rio Grande (Ohio) a 17-7 defeat in seven innings.
In game three, No. 4 IU Kokomo (Ind.) turned an early 7-0 deficit into an 11-9 victory over No. 5 Oakland City (Ind.), while top-seeded Point Park (Pa.) sent No. 8 Ohio Christian to the consolation round with a 19-5 victory in seven innings in the nightcap.
No. 3 Shawnee State 16, No. 6 WVU Tech 6 (8 Innings)
Shawnee State (26-19) scored early and often with six in the second, two in the third, and one in the fourth and fifth frames before scoring four in the sixth and two more in the eighth to clinch the run-rule victory.
The Bears recorded 13 hits with two players recording three hits and two others recording two hits. Tyler Lund went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs, and three runs, while Ryan Scott went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs. Noah Sniadach and Michael De Jesus each recorded two hits and three and two RBIs, respectively.
Broedy Boyce led the effort for the Golden Bears (27-21) going 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs. Francesco Calderon went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in the top of the fourth.
Ethan Ison (6-5) got the start for the Bears and tossed six innings allowing three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.
No. 2 IU Southeast 17, No. 7 Rio Grande 7 (7 Innings)
The Grenadiers (30-17) got on the board in a big way in the opening frame when Trevor Goodwin blasted a grand slam to straight away center field. Goodwin, who was one of six players to record multiple hits in the win, went 2-for-2 with five RBIs and three runs.
Logan Murphy, who hit a two-run home run in the fifth, carded two hits and two RBIs, while Colin Long led the way, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs. Meanwhile, Mason White, Luke Powell, and Slater Schield each tallied two hits in a winning effort for the Grenadiers.
For the RedStorm, Waskar Martinez led the way going 3-for-4, while Luke Lindamood, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, hit a three-run shot in the sixth. Darius Jordan and Angel Cruz each had two hits for Rio Grande.
Tyler Yotkewich got the start for the Grenadiers and picked up the win improving to 8-5 on the year.
No. 4 IU Kokomo 11, No. 5 Oakland City 9
Oakland City couldn't have asked for a better start, scoring four in the first followed by three more in the second. The Mighty Oaks (38-15) recorded seven hits over the first two innings but would only muster three hits over the final seven innings.
IU Kokomo began to rally in the fourth where they scored three runs to cut the deficit to 7-4. A solo home run by Xander Willis pushed the lead to 8-4 for the Mighty Oaks, but the Cougars (31-19) would dominate from that point on scoring seven unanswered in the final four innings.
The Cougars scored one in the fifth and two in the sixth before Jacob Medvescek hit a game-tying two-run home run in the seventh. Then, in the eighth, Alex Janke hit what would be the eventual game-winning two-run single to lift his team to the 11-9 victory.
After the IU Kokomo starter didn't make it through the second inning, Mason Whiteley entered the game and tossed 5.2 important innings. Asa Christie improved to 4-0 after picking up the win, while Victor Fujiu nailed down his sixth save of the season.
No. 1 Point Park 19, No. 8 Ohio Christian 5 (7 Innings)
After falling behind 3-0 early on, Point Park's high-powered offense woke up and was on full display hitting four home runs including a grand slam by Jordan Campbell and three three-run home runs by Isaac Santana, Luiz Gonzalez, and Carlos Burroughs.
The Pioneers (37-12) would tally 17 hits in the win and would score eight runs in the third and sixth innings. Jordan Campbell went 3-for-4 with six RBIs and two runs, while Omar Morillo added three hits, an RBI, and three runs.
Jared Campbell, Eddie Javier Jr., Luis Gonzalez, and Carlos Martinez each recorded two hits, while eight Pioneers drove in at least one run.
Carter Smith and Spencer Crane led the way for the Trailblazers (12-31) recording two hits apiece.
Ramon Rodriguez picked up the win for the Pioneers and improved to 9-2 after allowing three runs on four hits in his five innings of work.
Day 2 Schedule
Day two of the RSC Baseball Championship begins with a pair of elimination games at 9 a.m. ET and 12:30 p.m. ET. WVU Tech takes on Rio Grande in the opener before Oakland City takes on Ohio Christian in the second game of the day.
The two later games feature the four undefeated teams. IU Southeast battles Shawnee State at 4 p.m. ET, while Point Park takes on IU Kokomo in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m. ET.
